Santa Ana “Devil Winds” Could Re-Ignite Fire

Just as Firefighters Quell Last of the Flames, Wildfires Threaten to Return

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Southern California, as the same Santa Ana “Devil Winds” that whipped up dozens of wildfires last month are expected to return this afternoon.

Firefighters had just about completed their task yesterday, with just two remaining fires — Santiago and Poomacha — nearly contained.

The good news: The dry, hot winds aren’t expected to blow as hard, and firefighters this time have “strike teams” stationed in critical areas, according to the L.A. Times.

The Southern California wildfires burned hundreds of thousands of acres, and brought the nation’s yearly total nearly to the record levels of last year — 9.2 million acres burned. So far.
